The Dunlop process and the Talalay process are the two main processes used to manufacture latex. Our GOLS organic certified latex in all our mattresses is processed to the original Dunlop method. We believe that dunlop latex process works better for more people. The main difference in feel between the two types of foam is the springiness. While all types of latex foam have a springy and elastic feel, Talalay foam has an extremely springy, “bouncy” feel. Some people prefer this, but many do not like this “bounciness”. We have found that Dunlop works well for just about everyone while Talalay is more polarizing and produces a wide range of opinions.
GOLS certified latex has to be made with 95 percent natural materials. It is derived from the sap of organically grown rubber trees. Organic farmers do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This protects the environment, and also the health of plantation workers. The GOLS certification even covers the processing and the entire supply chain, ensuring the least chemical inputs in the finished product. With the increasing demand for natural materials, latex products have become popular. To help shoppers identify organically-grown latex products, the Control Union created the GOLS certification program. The main aim of the GOLS certification is to guarantee quality latex products made with minimum chemical inputs. It also outlines requirements for organic textiles and non-organic materials used in the final products. The GOLS guidelines cover the entire supply chain, from harvesting the raw materials to responsibly manufacturing, packing, and distributing the finished products.
Our organic certified latex are OEKO-TEX® Certified. These are strict standards for human and ecological safety. That means they've been tested in a lab to be safe from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and chloro-organic carriers that could be harmful to humans.
Our natural latex rubber foam — from our latex processing facility has been certified as a result of on-site inspection and comprehensive material lab and environmental testing in Germany. eco-INSTITUT verifies that our latex contains no harmful substances, no non-natural rubber content, and meets stringent standards for emissions (VOCs, formaldehyde, and Acetaldehyde).
Latex is a renewable resource, but not all latex is created equal. To ensure your latex hasn’t been chemically treated or mixed, keep an eye out for the Control Union Carbon Neutral Certified badge. This badge guarantees that the latex in your mattress is 100% latex and is produced in a factory that is entirely carbon neutral.
There is still no USDA organic standard for manufactured mattress cores but USDA/NOP certification does provide a third-party raw-material assurance for latex sap. This is awarded under the National Organics Program (NOP).
Organic certifications ensure that materials and products are made from organically grown inputs. An organic input is a substance cultivated through organic agriculture without GMOs (genetically modified organisms), synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. Every step of production must be certified for the final product to be considered organic.
Control Union Certifications aims to provide assurance and confidence to all interested parties that a product, process, service or organisation that it certified fulfils the requirements of the relevant inspection or certification standard. It’s for that reason that the certification process is laid down in procedures, which describes the entire process, from application to certificate issuance and who is qualified to conduct such activities.
LGA Certification is administered by TÜV Rheinland AG, a global provider of technical, safety, and certification services with headquarters in Cologne, Germany. The test checks the compliance of the mattress with DIN EN 1957 standard. DIN EN 1957 standard deals with functional performance for domestic use of a mattress.
